Why Eating Locally Sourced Food is a Game Changer for You and Your Community

Have you ever thought about where your food comes from and why it matters? You know I’ve always been into fitness- but, I’ve been WAY DOWN the rabbit hole on nutrition lately.  What I know is that we are much better off buying our  food locally.  Why?  I’m glad you asked…. Let's dive into why eating locally sourced foods is not just a trend, but a smart and impactful choice for ourselves, and our  communities.

Supporting Local Farmers and Businesses

When you buy food grown or made nearby, you’re putting your money directly back into the community. This means you’re helping your neighbors – the farmers, the shopkeepers, and everyone involved in getting that food to your table. Your dollars help these local businesses thrive, it also allows them to put food on their table, give their kids music lessons or dance classes, put them through college or a trade school.  Your support of local farms and shops also creates jobs and helps boost the local economy.  Trust me, I know it takes a little more effort to go to the farmer’s market or a local farm instead of a one-stop-shop like a SUPER STORE.  I KNOW the super store can probably offer you a better price- because they buy in bulk- but a better price at what TRUE cost?  The cost of your health?

Knowing Your Food's Journey

One of the coolest things about eating locally is knowing exactly where your food comes from. You can visit the farms, meet the people (you know I like to make as many connections as possible) who grow your veggies, raise the cows and the chickens you eat- and even learn about the farming practices they use.  Are they organic?  If not which chemicals DO they use?  Do they process the food in any way or it comes straight from the Earth to your tote bag?  This transparency means you can make informed choices about what you’re eating and rest easy knowing it's fresh, nutritious and responsibly grown.

Fresher and More Nutritious

Because local food doesn’t have to travel far, it’s harvested at its peak ripeness and delivered to you quickly. This means your fruits and veggies retain more of their natural nutrients and flavors. Imagine biting into a juicy tomato that was picked just a day ago or this morning- compared to one that was picked green, traveled across the country for weeks and had to ripen on a truck, in a box. The difference in taste and health benefits is huge!  I just read an article the other day that says most produce loses 30% of its nutrients after only 3 days!  Soooo, those big tubs of spinach I keep for weeks to make my smoothies- how nutritious could they actually be?!?!

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

Eating food that's grown locally means less transportation, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing local, you’re doing your part to decrease the environmental impact associated with long-distance shipping. Every local meal is a step towards a healthier planet and a longer life for those who are nutritionally conscious.

We’ll talk about the FDA and the food pyramid another day and how diet trends are leading to obesity and  literally killing us.  For today, I encourage you to get to a local farmer’s market- make connections, grow trust and buy your food from the farmers that tend the soils closest to your home!

I will do the same.

With love from my core,

Amity ❤️
