Let's be real for a moment – we all have those tasks we love to put off. Whether it's going to the DMV, post office, dentist or grocery store- these tasks often end up on the very back burner. But why is that?
First off, these errands aren't exactly what we'd call "fun." They usually involve lengthy drives, long waits, sometimes organizing paperwork that we may or may not have and an overall feeling of wasting our precious time.
And then there's the atmosphere…..
Have you noticed that the people working in these places often seem irritated, low-energy, and just plain miserable? It's like their mood sets the tone for the entire experience, making an already unpleasant task even worse for everyone that makes their way through the door.
But what if we could change that and make these experiences at least a TAD more positive? Here are a few suggestions:
Plan Ahead: Knowing exactly what you need before you go can save you a lot of stress. Check online for required documents or steps before the appointment. (BTW- if you need a REAL ID- and your name is different than it appears on your birth certificate - you’ll need a marriage certificate or divorce decree and a passport (and a picture of either of them will not cut it). 🙈Long story short, I DO NOT have a real ID.
Bring a Book or Earbuds: Instead of stewing in frustration, use the waiting time to catch up on reading or listen to your favorite podcast or music. It can make the time fly by.
Choose the Right Time: If possible, schedule these tasks for times when the office is less likely to be crowded. Early mornings or midweek afternoons can sometimes be quieter. And, SOMETIMES choosing a remote office is better- TODAY, not so much. 😂
Stay Positive: It's easier said than done, but try to approach the experience with a positive attitude. Your mood is contagious. Smile or share a kind word with those around you- both patrons and those people working to help you. This can not only lighten the mood but also brighten the day of all of those around you.
Personal Reward: Plan something enjoyable right after. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee from your favorite café, a quick stop at a park, or visiting a friend on your way home- having something to look forward to can make the task more bearable.
Gratitude Practice: Use the waiting time to think about things you're grateful for. It's a powerful way to shift your mindset from frustration to appreciation. And THAT is a huge WIN!
It's all about making the best out of a less-than-ideal situation. So, the next time you have to handle one of these tasks, try out some of these tips and see if they make the experience a little less dreadful.
Good luck and stop putting off what needs to be done… adding the stress of a deadline will NOT make things better or easier.
With love from my core,
Amity ❤️
