The Heartbeat of Community: Serving, Connecting, and Doing Good

In a world that often feels fragmented and disconnected, there's an undeniable power in serving one's local community. Beyond proximity, community is really an interconnectedness of lives, each bound together by shared experiences, aspirations, inspirations and challenges.

When we serve our local community it  is more than just a gesture of goodwill; it's a catalyst for positive change. Whether it's volunteering at a shelter, resource center or a church, organizing a neighborhood clean-up, reading to babies in the NICU, visiting the elderly in retirement homes or mentoring or coaching local neighborhood kids, every act of service sends ripples of kindness and compassion throughout the community.

I’m reminded just how amazing it feels when we take the time to do just this.   Often times I leave these situations  feeling as if I’M THE LUCKY ONE.

This weekend was just another reminder that when you do something out of the goodness of your heart- when you serve without expecting anything in return- you actually “get back” more than you could have ever imagined.

My friend Allison owns a resource center in Stanly County, NC.  After losing her brother to a fentanyl overdose before most of us even knew what fentanyl was- she herself became sober after battling with alcohol abuse.  She made it her mission to help others find their way into sobriety whenever she could.  She opened Will’s Place, in honor of her brother, Will in 2017 and has served countless families in many ways- providing help, education, support, transportation to detox and rehab, clothing at times- I can’t name everything that she does- and all at ZERO cost to those in need.  She’s built a center that focuses on community, connection, and trust.  This last year- they added a yoga studio to their space and they offer yoga classes to the entire community- even a 12 step yoga class for those in recovery.

The teachers are amazing, kind, gentle, and selfless.  When they asked me if I would come and be a part of their very first yoga retreat, I didn’t hesitate.  If you know me- I love to connect.  I love to learn about people and their stories.  I also love physical touch.  So- this was a chance for me to connect with a whole lot of sweet souls, to put my hands on them, to not only physically connect, but also emotionally connect with them.    With each head rub, body adjustment, a slight turn up of the lips into gentle smiles of the ladies I interacted with- my heart filled- more and more and MORE.  It’s almost as if they were serving ME instead of me serving them!

In this fast-paced world dominated by digital interactions, comparisons, social media posts, the need for validation, and lashing out,  hiding behind screens- it is now, more important than ever that we focus on creating more face-to-face interactions and more human connection- More acceptance and compassion and  less judgment.

In a world where we have become so obsessed with personal growth that we shut out those around us- even step on them to get to the top- we must remember to reach down, a pull them up with us.  Because we all know that “A rising tide lifts all boats” - JFK

Serving your local community provides opportunities to forge meaningful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. These connections transcend barriers of age, race, and socioeconomic status, fostering empathy, understanding, and mutual respect.

Every connection we make helps  build a community of hope, joy and possibilities.

As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, let us never forget the simple yet profound truth:  as we serve others, make connections, and do good for those in need, the result  is not only an enriched  community- but also increased self worth and abundant gratification.

If you want to find happiness, the answer could be simply to serve those around you.

With love from my core,

Amity ❤️

For a few years in the mid to late 70’s we attended a church close to where I was growing up. I don’t remember much about that church except my uncle got married there and I was supposed to be the f
