Navigating Grief

This week has hit me, HARD.   My Facebook feed is filled with notices of obituaries of the loved ones of people that I love.  Sisters, brothers, husbands….. and, today,  I learned that my daughter’s girlfriend’s father tragically died in a helicopter accident.    As her mom, I just wanted to hug her and hold her and tell her it is going to be ok.  The truth is- things won’t be the same again.  But I hope to help her with the tools and the coping mechanisms to navigate through this loss with a loving heart and strength to move forward.

As we journey through life, one of the harsh realities we face is the inevitability of loss, especially as the number of people around us who pass away increases with age.

Dealing with grief in such circumstances can be a profound and challenging experience.

As time unfolds, we find ourselves attending more funerals, comforting grieving friends, and grappling with the void left by departed loved ones. In these moments, it becomes crucial to cultivate coping mechanisms that allow us to navigate the complex emotions that accompany loss.

  • Acceptance: Acknowledge that loss is a natural part of the human experience. Embrace the reality that as we age, the circle of life inevitably leads to farewells. Acceptance doesn't erase the pain, but it provides a foundation for healing.

  • Express Your Emotions: Allow yourself to feel and express the spectrum of emotions that grief brings. Whether it's sadness, anger, or even moments of laughter as you reminisce, expressing these emotions is a crucial part of the healing process.

  • Build a Support System: Surround yourself with understanding and empathetic individuals who can offer support. Share your feelings with friends or join a grief support group where you can connect with others who are navigating similar experiences.

  • Preserve Memories: Celebrate the lives of those you've lost by preserving memories. Create a scrapbook, write letters, or engage in activities that honor and cherish the impact they had on your life.

  • Self-Care: Prioritize self-care during times of grief. Nurture your physical and mental well-being through activities that bring comfort and solace, whether it's meditation, exercise, or spending time in nature.

  • Seek Professional Help: If the weight of grief feels overwhelming, don't hesitate to seek the assistance of a mental health professional. They can provide guidance and support tailored to your individual needs.

  • Reflect on Legacy: As you witness the passing of others, take time to reflect on your own life. Consider the legacy you wish to leave behind and the impact you want to have on those around you.

Navigating grief in the face of increasing loss is a unique journey, and everyone copes differently.  There is no right or wrong way to grieve- but just remember to be true to yourself.  DO NOT allow yourself to STOP living- your loved one would NEVER want that for you.  Honor them by living your very BEST life.  I believe that they are watching you, smiling at your successes.
